Ask the Elders…

The world has become so fast paced; technology has advanced far quicker than we could ever have imagined. Instead of asking our parents or elders for answers, we are asking Google, Siri, Alexa, and other automated computer intelligence. Instead of learning through fables, stories and inspirational real-life examples from those who have gone before us, passed down through generations, we watch videos on our phones and look for answers online.

However, what if the answers were inside us all? Because we live in a world where we are encouraged to seek the answers outside ourselves, I feel we have lost the power of our own discernment. We have forgotten how to ask our own selves, soul, spirit, God, the Universe… whatever is personal to you. How would we know what a true answer feels like, unless we are still? I feel we have lost so much human connection, we have forgotten how to feel into our own hearts, to know the answer. To read body language, tone, energetic exchange, trust our gut, hear our heart, these are all life skills we need to survive, and which have been replaced by technology and distractions, to a large extent.

When it comes to wisdom, I feel the keys lie not only in reconnecting with the wisdom of the generations, but with the traditions and patterns that lie in nature, the messages from our bodies, the signposts and messages along the path of life which all point the way back home, home to our hearts, tapping into our own innate wisdom.

Our environments beckon at us to pay attention to all that is outside, and so rarely do we go inward. It’s uncomfortable and not something which is often familiar to many. It is something which I feel, in our current climate is so important all the same. With main stream media selling one narrative and the alternative media selling another, it can be confusing a difficult to know who to trust, what to trust, what’s true and real and what is not. The only way to truly know what’s real is to feel into our own hearts and build a relationship with our own discernment, to really feel into our bodies and reactions for the answers. To help us return home to ourselves, it’s key that we start to ask ourselves… why are we here, how can I serve, what are my gifts and what is my understanding of it all?

When it comes to our communities, elders and wisdom keepers, I feel there is a lot that media has portrayed by means of the older generation seeming feeble, slow, bothersome, senile, old fashioned, not moving with the times, stuck in their way, cranky and to be shoved in the corner and put out of the way. We have been taught this in movies and tv etc., through humor, to see this as comedy. We will all be old someday and the wisdom of our elders is more valuable than we could imagine. We are losing connection with these wisdom keepers, and the generations have changed so much that if we don’t reconnect soon, this valuable heritage and connection to our past will be lost.

Countries which still hold their traditions, from the past, and are not overly touched by the westernised culture, hold their elders in high esteem. They value their wisdom, and seek their advice on all life challenges. Not because they always have the answers, but because their flame lights the way and inspires hope for adaption and change, there is always a better day. They have lived through tough times and have met every challenge along the way, surely that is inspiration enough? It is not about being stuck in the past, but using their tenacity, courage, wisdom and understanding of what has passed, to inspire a new way forward. By showing us how feel into our hearts for the answers. The older generations are the last of those who did not need technology for the answers, they had to search inside and therefore are the most skilled roles models we have on teaching us to do the same.

In the western world, we are being constantly bombarded manipulated and ‘programmed’ by media, tv, movies, celebrities, governments and advertising telling US who we are. They tell us what to eat and drink, and where. They tell us what to wear and not to wear, how to think and be, and we are becoming more and more automated. We rely on our outside world to tell us who we are. To tell us what lives to live, and how to live them. If we are not following the herd, we are led to believe and feel there is something wrong or different about us, which creates isolation, depression, disconnection and socially pressures us to conform.

I feel there is a value in reconnecting our hearts, with the wisdom of our older and younger generation. I feel there is a value in the wisdom of natural healing, of our stories, of our traditions, and of the simple art of communication and connection. Whether it is about life, love, relationships, business, entrepreneurship, health, spirituality, life purpose, age etc. There is something to be learned, from each of the generations.

This is my aim, hope and motivation.
